Outside in: New Murals inspired by Dalí

In celebration of the SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival’s 10-year anniversary, Outside In: New Murals Inspired by Dalí brings the vibrant world of street art into The Dalí Museum. This unique exhibition invites both current and past SHINE artists to create dynamic murals within the Museum’s gallery, inspired by the surreal genius of Salvador Dalí, his collection and the iconic architecture of the Museum itself.

By showcasing street art within a museum context, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the intersections between public art and the gallery space.

Curated by Allison McCarthy, Associate Curator and Preparator at The Dalí Museum, the exhibition showcases murals by a diverse group of artists from around the globe. I had the opportunity to contribute my own mural, inspired by the legacy of Salvador Dalí, alongside incredibly talented artists such as:

Bakpak Durden · BASK · Chad Mize · Fintan Magee · Greg Mike · Lauren YS · Miss Crit · Naomi Haverland · Nicole Salgar · Palehorse · SHOK-1 · Tes One

“A Floral Vermouth”

Inspired by Reimagining Nature: Dalí’s Floral Fantasies, the piece unfolds in a dreamlike garden where whimsical flowers, echoing Dalí’s botanical illustrations, bloom around three bold, empowered older women.

For her mural at The Dalí Museum, Catalan artist Marina Capdevila evokes the charm of a Mediterranean vermouth moment through a surreal, floral lens.

Seated at a table set with traditional Spanish dishes, some drawn from Dalí’s own cookbook, these women embody the joyful, unapologetic spirit of aging. They are imagined as retirees from Costa Brava, Dalí’s birthplace, who now bask in the eternal sunshine of St. Petersburg, forming a vibrant bridge between two coastal worlds.

Capdevila’s mural becomes a joyful tribute to everyday rituals, female camaraderie, and the fantastical nature of flora. It’s a celebration of beauty in all its stages, where reality blurs with imagination, and life, like vermouth, is best savored slowly, in good company, surrounded by wonder.
